Irish Heart Foundation
60 Minute Challenge
Many of our students from 1st to 5th class have chosen to take on the 60 minute 4-week challenge in May and June.
A big thank you to the Irish Heart Foundation for providing the individual pocket planner for each student to record the time they spent getting their hearts pumping.
DCU Study on
Fundamental Movement Skills
St Laurence’s NS has been selected as one of only 4 schools in Kildare to work with DCU and the Kildare GAA Development coaches to study how the development of fundamental movement skills can be improved.
We are delighted for our infant classes to be involved in such a innovative study and we’re sure it will put them on the right path to develop to their full physical potential.
Students in the infant classes will be assessed in the coming weeks before a detailed programme of movement skills is designed in implemented with the help of Kildare GAA development officers.
Community Games Athletics
Congratulations to all the St Laurence’s NS students who received medals and awards for their performance in local community games athletics competitions. Well done to all!
The Food Dudes Healthy Eating Programme begins today (2nd May 2017) and will run for 16 school days in total. Every day students will be provided with a portion of fruit and a portion of vegetables. Students are rewarded for trying the fruit and veg with stickers, rewards and certificates.
Grapes and carrot sticks went down a treat today!
Community Games Art Competition
Inspired by our Active School Flag project many students created paintings based on their favourite games and activities. The pictures now decorate our PE hall!
From Monday January 16th all students have active challenges as part of their homework. We registered with Laya Healthcare for their Super Troopers active homework initiative which is free to schools.
Each student has their own active homework journal which assigns and records their activities each day.
Junior infants to 2nd class use the junior journal and 3rd class to 6th class utilise the senior journal.
Promote Your Club!
The Club Ambassadors Team of the Active School Committee are on a recruitment drive in 2017! Each ambassador has put together a presentation and poster to be presented at assembly. The posters will remain on the wall of the school hall.

Tag Rugby with Athy Rugby Club
From September to November our senior classes (3rd to 6th class) were extremely lucky to have Joe Carbury of Athy Rugby Club come to St Laurence’s NS to provide tag rugby coaching sessions. Joe is the father of Leinster and Ireland player Joey Carbury!
All 6 senior classes really enjoyed the opportunity to learn from Joe who is a former half-back for the Blackrook College rugby club and is a born and bred New Zealander!
Ms Porter’s 3rd class had their minds blown when they explored the human body and nutrition. The class did an experiment on the amount of sugar in a number of different drinks that are widely available and their results were jaw-dropping!
|Drink||Teaspoons of Sugar|
Amazingly a small bottle of flavoured water has 4 teaspoons of sugar while regular still water has no sugar.
Healthy Eating in 2nd Class
Ms O’ Neill’s 2nd class explored the food pyramid and learned how to make some super nutritious soup!
